THE WORLD OF CALDRITH
Powers Beyond the Kingdoms
The Healers of Caldrith
An order that serves no kingdom and refuses no one. They come out of Thevric, they wear long white robes that leave only the face showing, and they carve their halls out of rock. Their treatment is free, though they will accept food sent back to Thevric. The senior among them have their lips sewn shut, and speak with their fingers and with chalk on a slate. To raise the whites is to fly Healer colors over a ship or a wagon carrying the dead, and no army in the history of Caldrith has ever attacked one.
The Seamothers
A women’s order living on Seamothers Island off the Galmar coast, who renounce society and follow the Way of the Sea. They come back to the coastal towns now and then for the seasonal rites, they know their herbs, and they tell fortunes. They fly close enough to witchcraft that most kingdoms would have burned them out long ago. Galmar keeps them, because Galmar has nothing else.
The Witches
Outlawed since the Witch-Sorcerer Wars, hunted by journeymen without trial, and by the sorcerers’ account monstrous. By their own account, what they do is encouragement: the natural way the earth wants to tell itself. They make talismans of twig and feather and thread, they live in places that are not on maps, and they hold that the Veil was divided from this world for good reason, and that dragging beasts out of it was never ours to do.
The Sora
A travelling people of one to four caravans to a family, bound by no kingdom’s law, holding no land and no seat in any council. The old guard call them thieves. They have their own view of that. Their creed: our path is the way of all lost things, searching for a home.
