The Champions
A champion is a person bonded to one of the great beasts of the Veil. There are fewer every year, and no one will say why. The number beside each order is how many it can currently field, which in some cases is a state secret and in one case is a joke.
Galmar · Seal Champions (4)
- Liam O’Brien (17–18). The newest champion of Galmar, and not aligned with Galmar.
- Champion Hergest (early 40s). The Seal Champion of SaltReach, and the closest thing that town has to a hero.
Brevos · Eagle Knights (16)
- Prince Tan Lenik (18). Son of the King of Brevos.
- Sir Dunstan (60s). Eldest of the First Wing, and considered the most experienced eagle knight alive.
- Sir Erland and Sir Austen (late 40s). Twins, close confidants of Sir Dunstan, and known for a rigid obedience to law and tradition.
- Sir Leonard (late 30s). Black-haired and youthful. The last Eagle Knight to receive an animal, and once spoken of as a future warlord of Brevos. Bitter, and proud of it.
Evarra · Hawk Warriors (30 to 40)
- Rhiannon Tempest (19). A daughter of Evarra.
- Captain Kye (late 30s). Austere commander of the Hawk Warriors.
- Tyr (late 30s). A mostly silent warrior with long dark hair. His family was killed when he was a boy.
- Vellis (early 30s). Fierce, dark-haired, and almost fanatically loyal to Captain Kye. She argues for the harshest punishment available, every time.
Orvyn · The Iron Bulls (15)
- Tullis Ostan. The King rides with his own champions.
- Hestia Ostan (23). The King’s daughter. An exceptional Bull Champion, and usually kept well away from any battle.
- Champion Lodi Kynd (40s). Principal fighter of the Iron Bulls and Hestia’s sworn protector. Everyone assumes he will marry her one day, including him.
Quenhal · The Horned Company (12)
- Shine-Prince Aolar Futhanon. Ruler, Shine and champion.
- Fintan (50s). An experienced warrior, and leader of the Horned Company whenever Aolar is elsewhere.
- Dana (30s). Aolar’s lover, and daughter of a powerful Quenhalian family. Strong, dependable and reliable.
- Scatha (40s). Called the Red Maiden for her savagery in battle, and reckoned one of the finest spear-fighters of her generation.
Valnor · War Bear Riders (10)
- Freya Undottir (18). Valnor’s newest Bear Rider, and the only one this year.
- Sigfrid (50s). Lover of Lady Ylva Isken and the most prominent champion in Valnor. Mighty in battle. His bear has one eye.
- Hagar (50s). Sigfrid’s much larger and wholly indomitable friend. Sagas have been written about the two of them together.
- Gunnar (40s). Brown-haired and soft-eyed, and berserk in battle. He killed his own brother once, and has vowed to spend the rest of his life making up for it.
Solwyn · Lion Runners (12)
- Afa Mbeki (18). The newest and youngest Lion Runner of Solwyn, and the only one this year. Tall, willowy and athletic.
- Usman (20s). Afa’s older brother. A powerful runner and a fierce warrior, who always seems happy, even charging into battle.
Thevric · The Pig Friends (2)
- Silver Hagun (18). Champion of Thevric.
- Badoc Thum (50s). A very, very round man who has never fought a battle in his life. He prefers to live at peace with his pig, and drinks to forget the Flux, which took his wife.
Nevarrow · Snake Champions (6)
- Talis Mitki (30s). A blind snake dancer who uses his companion’s senses in place of his own, and leads the Snake Champions of Nevarrow. Known for a manic laugh, and for looking straight at you although he cannot see you.
Dravendor · The Fox Guard (5 to 15, estimated)
- No one outside Dravendor can name a single member of the Fox Guard, and few inside can. Dravendor has never fought an open battle with another kingdom, and the Fox Guard are believed to serve the Council alone, as enforcers and as its quieter hand.
